Is the hiring process complicated?   Danish Island Goes Green    Residents of a little island are proving that they can do big things. Samso is a small island off the coast of Denmark. It is home to only 4,000 people, but the people of this small island had a very big idea. In 1997, they decided to become carbon-neutral within 10 years. They have now achieved that goal. Carbon-neutral means that for every amount of carbon burned to create energy, a renewable resource is also used. Every time the people of Samso use oil, they also use solar or wind power. They harm the environment much less than most people do. In addition, the residents of Samso have beaten the European Union to the punch. The EU has committed to cutting carbon emissions by 20 percent by 2020. Samso has brought their emissions to a much lower rate in only 10 years. The EU has also set a goal of getting 20 percent of their energy from renewable resources by 2020. Samso has done better in a much shorter time. To do this, the people of Samso invested their own money. Over the period of 10 years, they invested $84 million. That works out to almost $20,000 a person. This money went to build solar panels and wind turbines to capture renewable energy. Renewable energy doesn't simply make the residents of Samso feel "green." It is also an investment, as the wind turbines now turn a profit each year. Samso serves as a model to other communities and show what people can achieve if they put their mind to it. One American environmental activist admitted to using Samso as a model to help show what people can do to help the environment. Samso has become so well known that it has also become a tourist destination.
